Quality of a Separated Soul

The soul, separated from its body, can no longerexercise the powers of sense, for these require the service ofbodily members. But the soul is still the root-principle ofsense-action and retains its fitness for activating sense-organs.Hence, we may say that the sentient powers belongradically (or in root )to the separated soul.

Certainly, sense-action itself is not within the powerof the separated soul.

Although the fire of hell be a bodily fire, it canafflict a spirit thus far at least, that it candetain it, and hinder its movement according to its ownwill.
